Lowering Calories Correctly
Controlling calories is a fantastic way to lose fat, but we've got to do it correctly to get the benefits.  Lowering calories too much only counteracts fat loss and lowering them too soon and too fast is a horrible strategy. In order to use calorie controlled diets in the right way we have to know how many calories we need to maintain all bodily functions, let's say that number is 1800 calories a day.  Now, we lower that amount by 200 calories.

But, we don't keep ourselves at 1600 calories every day!  No.  What we do is we move that number up and down to keep the body guessing.  So, one day will be 1800, one day will be 1300,
and another will be 1600. Don't let these small changes per day fool you.  Our bodies are very sensitive and adaptable and they will notice the changes and not be able to adapt to the new amount.  Therefore our bodies can shed fat.

Please do not lower your calorie amount below 500 calories under your maintenance level.  This is called starvation and it leads to fat storage, not fat loss.

Is A Calorie A Calorie?

In a word, no.  A calorie is not a calorie.  Our body reacts differently to carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.  The most important macro-nutrient to manipulate is carbohydrates. I am not advocating an Atkins style less than 20 grams of carbs a day diet.  Oh, lord no.  In the long run (if you can make it that far) this diet doesn't work and is not healthy.

But, that does not mean that some of the principles are not sound.  Carbohydrates do jack up our insulin levels and high insulin levels do mean increased fat storage. However, we need carbs.  The trick is to use carbs in our diets correctly.  And that means having carbs at different times of the day and in different patterns throughout the week.

A rule of thumb, is get most of your carbs in the morning.  Also, have higher and lower carb days.  These tips will help anyone burn fat, but the more you know about these techniques the faster you will burn.

The wonderful thing about staggering calories and carbs is that it's easy and it uses real foods that we eat every day.  We don't need Seattle Sutton or Jenny Craig.  We just have to diet smart. Also, we can follow these principles every where we go - on vacation, or to a nice restaurant.

As I mentioned earlier about carbs and insulin, hormones are the true key to rapid fat loss.  We need to have unique and intimate knowledge of these things to get the maximum benefits. Once we know how to use these tools, than fat just drops away, and I know that exercise is healthy but, we won't even need it.  Miss a week or two and the weight stays off.
